I know what you mean. The only thing that keeps me from wiping Windows off this Vaio is tha occasionally I have to access a site (for my university work) and they have a browser sniffer which won't accept a Linux-Firefox, so I have to reboot. It's best to have the choice.

You can always use curl with the proper --user-agent option value to download web page

Right.. There is a plugin for Mozilla and firefox that fools web pages into thinking that it's Internet Explorer... Is that what you were refering to?

Changing your User-Agent Value

Here are specific instructions on masquerading your browser by modifying the User-Agent value it sends:

Opera
By default, Opera identifies itself as a version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Opera 6 pretends it's IE 5.0, Opera 7 pretends it's IE 5.5 and IE 6.0. To change the settings in Opera 7, go to the Network panel of the Preferences dialog and adjust the value selected in the Browser Identification drop-down list. Note that the values in this list are currently fixed, with no way to add additional user agent strings. Full details on the list values can be found in Opera's knowledge base at http://www.opera.com/support/search/...dml?index=570.

Internet Explorer
Most sites support Internet Explorer, so there's usually little reason to change its user agent value. If you are experienced with the Windows registry, however, you can easily add new values to the user agent value's comment section by using the registry editor (regedit.exe) to add new subkeys to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform

After restarting the browser, the names of these subkeys are automatically inserted into the brower's user agent string.

Mozilla 1.x/Netscape 7.x
The user agent value can be specified in the defaults\pref\all.js file by adding the "general.useragent.override" property, as in this example:

pref( "general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)" );

Firebird
Firebird users (an alternative browser from the Mozilla Foundation) can install plug-ins for managing the user agent value, such as the User Agent Switcher at http://chrispederick.myacen.com/work...agentswitcher/ or the UserAgent bar at http://uabar.mozdev.org. Alternately, type the special URL "about:config" in the browser's location bar to access the browser's properties and use the popup menu to add a new property called "general.useragent.override" with the desired value.
If thats all your keeping Windows around for then I would format that partition..... No need to reboot just to view a certain web page. Ethically, I refuse to support/visit sites that force you to use IE. So I never bother installing this plugin or modifying my User-Agent value to begin with....

Ah.... It uses that damn .xpi extension. I hate that. I like to back stuff up like that. Making a blank web page that links directly to that .xpi in the same local hard drive folder is a good way to back stuff up like that. If anyone is interested in keeping it as a backup, the .xpi gets dumped in your cache..... Make a blank web page that links directly to it and then tarball the folder..... You never know if someone decides to stop working on it and then ditches the web site completely.....

It's a must have for Windows computers in my opinion....

This will let you get rid of that entry in the add/remove programs list as well as listing ALL the software that's installed on Windows. It lists remenants of things you THOUGHT you uninstalled a long time ago as well as stuff that doesn't even show up thru the add/remove list... It's also got a sweet registry cleaner but be semi-cautious when using that. I ussually let it run it's automated full registry scan and then delete EVERYTHING it picks up with hardly no ill effect. Only once did doing that make a 2k install unstable. But it makes a backup that you can restore as well...

Just thought I'd throw it at you. It could very well take care of this driver problem your having on your dads computer. Atleast to the point where the setup will actually take you to the setup. It's still seeing remenants of the previous install so that's why it is giving you the option to uninstall and not install...... 10 to 1 if you use this prog and scour his computer, you'll be able to reinstall the driver and hopefully Windows will decide that it wants to play nice after that.....

Jon

Checkout /pub/slackware/9.1/images as well... There is my favorite slack background in there that you might dig......
I used to have a copy of that program. I had it installed on my pc and my dads. Unfortunately, I ran across another freeware app called RegSeeker and I "thought" it seemed like it did a better job than regcleaner. I was wrong!!! Thanks for the link. I will try it on my dad's PC. Hopefully that will help end the headaches. I'll let you know how it turns out.
