Ok, well of course I read english almost as good as swedish, I just didnt want to import. Toll and stuff... But if it can be learnt online as well, do you have any really good links? I know theres a huge tutorial on the slackware home page, is it enough? Or should I read some other ones as well? (Btw wtf does RTFM mean?)

RTFM means Read The Freakin' Manual!

Right here is a good place to find lots of info, but if you want to learn slackware, learn from the source. you wouldn't want to be trained how to fly a plane by a shoe salesman would you? )

i am using slackware for the first time as well and i have to say i love it. i have tried other easier distros like red hat and mandrake and even suse, but they take a lot of the learning away from you. everything can be configured from a gui like windows xp. that isnt always bad, but if you really want to know how to fix your system, and there will be times when you cant get into the graphical part of it, then you will need to know how to work from the command line interface (cli).

slackware and vector linux (based on slackware) are two very good distros to learn linux on, to say the least. slackware is the original linux distro too i think. its been around the longest.

anyway, have fun! and if you need anything, dont forget to ask and search the forums

If you can get yourself online in slack and off and running then you don't need to buy any books.

I am currently trying to help my brother convert, problem is he has that damn D-Link 520+ NIC, things aren't going to be pleasant.

As long as you have a normal NIC you'll get on...read this and ask questions.

You'll do fine, I've ran most distributions and I wont use anything except slackware for my server.

It shouldn't be hard if it's already set up for your connection. I think the only thing Linux worries about is your network card. Most of the time, network cards are autodetected though. You should be fine.

(edit) Just remember to turn plug and play off. That somehow kept RedHat from detecting my card once. Similar problems could occurr in Slack.

In any event. The book to start out with is the one that is at the slackware site and comes on the install disks. It is based on 8 but most of it is still pertinent. And it is free. I put it on my desktop to use and read.

Hey Grisnak,

Have you tried www.bokfynd.nu? A very nice online book store...or rather... it compares a bunch of online stores with each other, and gives you a list of the prices of a book in different online stores.

Otherwise... I've found a bunch of Linux books in akademibokhandeln or Wettergrens.

Well...

FWIW, when I started about 4 years ago I went with slack because everything I read told me that it was the most "unix like" of all. I have no regrets and would not consider anything else. Then again though I remember when DOS 3.2 was the king and everything worked off of a CLI anyway (except for the menu batch file system that I wrote).

I love slack and with 9.1 no matter what others say, I think it is ready for the home desktop, you just MUST know your hardware.

D-Link 520+ - wireless pci NIC, Texas Instruments acx100 chipset ..... a walk in the park ... 5 mins work and you will have this baby up and running with Slack.

Just make sure you have installed wireless-tools and the latest drivers from http://acx100.sourceforge.net/ .... (good forum there for help too) and you will be cable free in no time !!!

Another good site for help if you need it is http://www.houseofcraig.net/acx100_howto.php

I have been running a D-Link 520+ in my server box for ages now so the lappie can have internet access anywhere in the house - the other end pipes out to a D-Link 900+ AP thru a converted satellite dish to a remote DSL connection for the wired network at home

Even hung an old 56k modem off the box and created a dialup server when I am away from the house with the lappie ..... cut my linux teeth on Mandrake but now I have tasted Slackware there is no going back or changing for me.
