Any chance you might know if it will "just work" without composite available? i.e., simply NOT be transparent, but still work?
I've used xcompmgr, and that works well, but of course, not with Xinerama :/

I'm not 100% but I don't believe it does. I'm fairly certain it requires some kind of compositing.

Here's my desktop (Openbox + tint2 + conky).
That's Phobos (one of Mars' moons) on the wallpaper.

I attached my conkyrc file for you, first off I give most of the credit to kevin lange over at the compiz.org I mostly copied his design.
Before you can use it though you will need to install "conkyforecast" to get weather to work. I have made a slackbuild available here
http://webpages.charter.net/daedra1/...orecast.tar.gz
you can get the source from here
https://launchpad.net/%7Em-buck/+arc...st_2.09.tar.gz
once you have it installed you now need to download two missing fonts, they are "Pie charts for maps" and "PizzaDude Bullets". Just google them and you will find them.
and for the email, I use gmail so I used the "gmail_parser.py" script which can be found here.
http://webpages.charter.net/daedra1/gmail_parser.py just save it in ~/scripts
This script is for gmail, if you use something else you will have to probably find another script.

@ botnet, what is that wallpaper? Just the name would probably do, I'd like to see if one exists for my resolution(s), it's very nice!
