Apparently, the latest drivers don't need any "switching" software. You just install it, and it uses the Intel hardware until you tell it you want to use the NVidia hardware.

I'm impressed with how well it seems to work, and with how easy it was to set up.

I'll have to see how it affects battery life, which is more important to me on this machine than good graphics.

I ran glmark2 to test the differences between the two. These are the results:
Code:
me@here:~$ glmark2
=======================================================
    OpenGL Information
    GL_VENDOR:     Intel
    GL_RENDERER:   Mesa Intel(R) HD Graphics 630 (KBL GT2)
    GL_VERSION:    4.6 (Compatibility Profile) Mesa 20.3.1
=======================================================
<snip> I'll spare you the gory stuff </snip>
=======================================================
                                  glmark2 Score: 2055
=======================================================
And using the NVidia hardware:
Code:
me@here:~$ __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia glmark2
=======================================================
    glmark2 2020.04
=======================================================
    OpenGL Information
    GL_VENDOR:     NVIDIA Corporation
    GL_RENDERER:   GeForce GTX 1050/PCIe/SSE2
    GL_VERSION:    4.6.0 NVIDIA 455.45.01
=======================================================
<snip> And again... </snip>
=======================================================
                                  glmark2 Score: 2438
=======================================================
It has been years since I've been concerned with graphical performance. How do I interpret these results? Can it really be that the Intel HD graphics are 85% as good as the NVidia GTX? Is that what these results mean, or am I over-simplifying it?

Is the Intel side really good, or is the NVidia side really bad?

Got my new laptop today and have been learning how to use Nvidia Optimus. With the slackwiki and -current I had it up and running in no time. However does anyone know how to make __NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia global. Or basically just have everything use the nvidia card all the time with out having to request the nvidia card with commands.

Thanks

Nevermind I figured out how to use the NVIDIA Card only. I basically followed the Arch wiki, but tweaked it since I use AMD and not intel.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php..._graphics_only

But it was a little choppy so after more searching I realized I needed to enable PRIME synchronization. Now its buttery smooth.

There is a patch for NVIDIA 390 series to work with the 5.11 kernel.

GeForce RTX 3060

-Fixed a bug where calls to vkCreateDevice could fail on Ampere GPUs when ray tracing extensions were enabled and the application was running within the Steam Linux Runtime.
-Fixed a regression that could cause display corruption when using a scaled resolution after resuming from power management suspend.
Installation instructions can be found under the heading, "Additional Information" at the above link. Under that same heading you can find detailed installation instructions by clicking on "README."

Edit in: Builds and functions properly with the 5.11.1 kernel.

This should be exciting news for Linux users who like to play windows based games.

GeForce GPU Passthrough for Windows Virtual Machine (Beta).......
......NVIDIA has enabled GPU passthrough beta support for a Windows virtual machine on GeForce GPUs. What does this mean?
With virtualization enabled, GeForce customers on a Linux host PC can now enable GeForce GPU passthrough on a virtual Windows guest OS. There are a few GeForce use cases where this functionality is beneficial such as:
*GeForce customers wanting to run a Linux host and be able to launch a Windows virtual machine (VM) to play games
*Game developers wanting to test code in both Windows and Linux on one machine......

I do not have time to play games, as this large one keeps me occupied. I am not fond of Windows but I am betimes compelled to use it. I just reboot rather than fiddle with virtual machines. Slackware is able to read/write/search/etc ntfs files provided that I exited windows with grace. I am able to appreciate Slackware more as a result of being forced to use Windows. A Bohemian defenestration of Microsoft after the order of Jezebel and her dogs should not sadden me but at present I choose coexistence over frustration.

It is interesting that NVIDIA, which is-- like Microsoft an invidious commercial company, is sufficiently enlightened to permit/encourage its employees to develop cross platform tools. It seems to be a good news.

I'll get excited when they release a newer 390.141 series. Currently using a patched version for the 5.11.x kernel.

This is fresh 0-day information
The Unix drivers page isnīt updated yet, even http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L..._64/latest.txt has 460.67 as latest release.

How stable is that "new feature branch"?
Iīm having good results running NVidia 460.67 installed with "--no-unified-memory".
Good results means no more freezes, suspend and hibernation works every time (so far).
Only hybrid-suspend doesnīt work.

I think my hardware combination doesnīt handle well that "unified memory" for Cuda driver.

I can't recall ever having a problem with the "new feature branch," but, then I'm lucky I can remember my own name these days. "Seasoned citizen" and all that.
The 465.24.02 version has been running on this box for about 45 minutes now and everything is working as it should... so far.

If you're using the blob drivers, might consider upgrading, if you haven't already. Some security issues.
