Mister redundant here.
slackware64-14.2 is alive and well with kernel 5-11-14
Built and installed without problem
about a week of uptime with 5.11.13 so I switched back to;
Code:
make localmodconfig
no need to unset IDXD as PV already fixed it

of course you can install IDXD on Slackware14.2 (see picture). I don't understand why your problems with compilation of specific module are in kernel thread as this has nothing to do with the kernel.

You don't need systemd as you implyed here https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ml#post6224861

IDXD is only needed by Xeon in very specific configuration: datacenter (as I explained here https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ml#post6224069
I don't think that any of Slackware users have this setup working

This brings one question:
if you are using localmodconfig then IDXD should be stripped down so how come that you still had to manually remove IDXD module?

claiming that localmodconfig config is safe is quite overstatement. For the sake of experiment I applied localmodconfig on default Slackware kernel config (5.11.14)
among other things I lost:
ACPI options
scheduler options (in the case that one wants to boot kernel with different scheduler than default)
networking and IPTABLES options (too many to list all of them)
PCCARD options
sensor options
USB options
CDROM/DVD filesystem options
EXFAT and NTFS options and CD/DVD filesystem options
Bluetooth
SD card

and so on and so for. Maybe someone does not need them of course.

What I did not gain: kernel size will be the same (localmodconfig will not affect build-in options) so memory footprint is the same
Boot time remains the same (because build-in options are not affected and modules that are loaded during boot process are preserved)
What you will gain: faster compile time as most of the modules is gone. This is really minimal advantage in comparison to spending time and restoring required modules in the case that someone is using default kernel config.

Yes localmodconfig is used but coupled with specific software that gathers all information regarding ondemand modules that may be in use.

I REALLY like localmodconfig but I never have complete trust in automation of any kind so I always check at least for the more important settings with "make menuconfig" to verify before committing. It takes may 5 minutes to check and I consider that a small investment. I have been a little more lax recently with so many updated kernel releases but once Official v15.0 is released I will likely keep the same kernel for many months so I will probably spend more like an hour manually verifying all the details.

Still, localmodconfig provides a great baseline, but thank you Aeterna for researching some specifics on what can get lost.

5.12-rc8
Release Candidate 8, for the 5.12 "mainline" development kernel has been been made available for testing.

The tarball, https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/t/linux-5.12-rc8.tar.gz

Mr. Torvalds' announcement, http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/k...4.2/01919.html

Edit it: FWIW, 5.12-rc8 has been built and installed, and is running as it should in -current with the Nvidia-465.24.02 driver and the VirtualBox test build 6.1.19-revision-143777, along with the appropriate extension pack.

Wow, I upgraded to Linux 5.10.31 and I see more devices in 'sensors', there was only coretemp-isa-0000 in 5.4.65:

Code:
nvme-pci-0500
Adapter: PCI adapter
Composite: +37.9°C (low = -0.1°C, high = +74.8°C)
                       (crit = +79.8°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0: +59.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +58.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +54.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +54.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +56.0°C (high = +80.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)

acpitz-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface
temp1: +27.8°C (crit = +105.0°C)
temp2: +29.8°C (crit = +105.0°C)
BTW, has anyone experienced Intel AC 9560 crashes with Linux 5.10.31? This is the reason I'm upgrading the kernel.
