terminal keeps messing up

ok after a few mins aterm (and xterm and konsole) keep, well when i press enter in a line with no command i cant really explain but it keeps doing this:
[RETURN] = when i press return.

bash-3.00#[RETURN]bash-3.00#[RETURN]bash-3.00#[RETURN]bash-3.00#[RETURN]

instead of doing what it normally does:

bash-3.00#[RETURN]
bash-3.00#[RETURN]
bash-3.00#[RETURN]
bash-3.00#[RETURN]
bash-3.00#[RETURN]

when its doing it on 1 line i also cant see the commands i type as well. i've looked on google but i cant really explain it.

This usually happens when you have used "cat" and some weird characters that scrolled across have messed up the terminal.
Running the command

reset

fixes that. Even when your terminal is so messed up that you cannot even see what you type, just type "reset" and hit ENTER.
