if rc.M is corrupt I don't think you can boot from the boot disk since the boot process will try to run rc.M.
So you're saying that I will have to boot from a CD??

I have another PC at home that I can boot to Slackware OR Fedora......could I just boot to Slackware on this box, then copy the rc.6 and rc.M files from there to a disk and move them over?

If you have to edit the file under windows, can you use an editor like Ultraedit that lets you save the file in Unix format instead of dos?

Copying the files from a Fedora installation is probably a bad idea. Not having used Fedora, I can't confirm this, but it is reasonable to suspect they are different from the Slackware ones.

[EDIT]
Misread your post (doh!). Sure, copy the Slackware rc.M and rc.6 over to another Slackware installation. Sounds like the easy way to do it.
[EDIT]

Your best bet might be to use a live CD (such as SLAX). You can then edit the files in your slackware installation with an editor such as kate (part of kde) and set the EOL (end of line) back to UNIX style (as opposed to the DOS style they're probably in having edited them in wordpad).

Booting from the Slackware install CD (as was suggested) won't work if these files are indeed corrupt. This method only uses a kernel from the installation CD, everything else comes from your system.

THAT WORKED GREAT!!

I got home and it still would let me log in locally. I logged in, went into the GUI, went into Kate, changed the line endings from Windows to UNIX, rebooted, and it worked perfectly!!!

Thank you for your help!!

I think that you can add "single" or "1" after the name of your kernel at boot time and boot into single-user mode.

If I were you I'd try the ones from Slackware not Fedora. In general it is really important to backup /etc files before editing unless you really know what you are doing.
