strange sound problem

when i run XMMS or any other non-KDE video/audio player I hear the sound but when I run noatun and kaboodle I cant get anything. I tried starting/stopping the aRts server and I even went as far as using the aRts tool (cant remember the exact name) so i could play a song and see if the aRts tool was "seeing" the sound (it was).
I thought it was just a problem with my permissions ( I changed /dev/dsp* to 777), still nothing.

Any ideas? Thanks

Did you try chmod 777 /dev/mixer and chmod 777 /dev/snd ?
