Unhappy Startx error - missing libfontconfig.so.1

Hi new to Linux and successfully installed Slackware 10.2 on an IBM thinkpad 600X - no problems at all apart from some tweaking to get the wireless card working.

The weekend I thought I would upgrade to the latest releases for 10.2 using slapt-get, however I now have a problem running startx.

I get the following error:

Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID, removing from list
kdostartupconfig: error while loading shared libraries: libfontconfig.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
/opt/kde/bin/startkde: line 80: /root/.kde/share/config/startupconfig: No such file or directory

Any help gratefully received - wish I'd left as it was before the upgrade - but hey ho we all learn

libexpat.so.0 not found

Thanks for that have installed freetype and fontconfig.

Now have an error that libexpat.so.0 cannot be found when running startx.

This Linux is not easy any more clues?

Excuse me (it's a bit offtopic), but why don't you start X with "init 4"?

hmm. possibly a version mismatch.
did you update your libs after installing?
have you checked if the file is physically there?
which tree are you using slapt-get to upgrade to?

Questions

have you checked if the file is physically there?
which tree are you using slapt-get to upgrade to?

I can only answer one of these questions - the file is not physically there.

Not sure what you mean regarding the updating of libs after installing.

With regard to splapt-get I just ran slapt-get - update and then slapt-get -upgrade and it did it all for me.

Many thanks for your help, I am learing a great deal here.

take a look in /etc/slapt-get/slapt-getrc
at the end of the source line
does it say 10.2, 11.0 or -current?

one typically runs ldconfig(as root) to update their libs
useless if it isn't there though...

try reinstalling the package

11.0 instead of 10.2

Thats the problem update 10.2 with 11.0 files - looks like I need to start all over.

Many thanks

that shouldn't be a problem
as long as you update all relevant
packages along with their deps

you can always use slapt-get
with the --dist-upgrade flag
to go to a clean release
(also read the UPGRADE
instructions on the ftp)
