Question Startx black screen bug.

It was previously discussed in another thread, but i can't find it :/.
Other users also reported this bug.

Anyway, so when using Xfce (i use only this one), when i type startx, sometimes nothing happens but a black screen. I have to ctrl+alt+backspace.

It's a hard-boiled bug and it affects all versions since maybe 10.x.
The ARMslack is also affected.
It's not related to xorg driver.

Can you provide some more info, like graphics card and driver, and exactly when it happens. If you run startx again, does it work then ? How often ? Anything in the logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log ?

have you tried using the packages from testing, they tend to fix most nvidia problems, also the solutions from this post will probably work also

It could be an Xorg bug, if it happens no matter the driver.

Yup, it existed long before nouveau.

I forgot to say it's only with runlevel 3.
Never had a problem with xdm, kdm, etc..

Hmmm, it sounds like Xorg is working but it's just not loading anything. When you do "startx" does your mouse cursor look like an "X" while moving it around?

My first suggestion is to su or login as root and use the pkgtool application. Second from the bottom is "Setup" and then try running "xwmconfig" again and select XFCE. Afterwards, see if "startx" works at all.

Even then, try using an application that requires X and see if it loads X with it (e.g. firefox).

If neither of those work, I think showing us the logs would be best.

I've never had this "bug" but I'm not using nVidia based video so maybe it is an nVidia driver problem ...

Just a black screen. No cursor.
It's not a hardware problem, had this on many computers/arch/graphic cards.

The problems with most of the nvidia graphics cards have been fixed since the release of the 2.6.38 kernel and the nouveau driver.

Slackware64 current 3.2.13 SMP Using nouveau driver
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G72[GeFore 7300LE]
An occasional hiccup, maybe starting with one of slackware 12 versions on, with or without nv driver. Don't have the Xorg log, will copy it when it happens again.
Black screen, have to check if there is a cursor or pointer? So used to it I just --ctrl+alt+backspace into a new terminal startx or login to root & shutdown, and boot.
Running xwmconfig doesn't keep it from reoccurring again. lol Xauthority and screensaver always generates an error on shutdown and references to 'pixman' error says
Code:
"make sure you have the latest version of 'pixman0.20.2'before...."
Found a note for 6.feb.2012
"EE Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist,0)"
xinit:Lost connection to server@user@host:~$startx
Before I'd panic, spend weeks, months following a thread thru xorg's spider web called documentation. Not anymore, I know the module exist and it will boot!

I installed the latest nouveau driver from git and it's much more stable. Maybe try that.
