Sound sometimes not working on login

I have an intermittent problem whereby sound sometimes doesn't appear to be working after a new login. This appears to be fixed by simply logging out and logging in back again. (Using kde with graphical login).

This is irritating. How do I track this down next time it happens?

Thanks

Does pulseaudio -k solves the problem ?
Could it be you boot too fast ?

No. That is something I tried last time and it gave an error message. I can't remember what it was.

Could you explain the suggestion I might boot too fast?

This is a PC that I have had since 2012 and which has been running slackware ever since then.

Ok. Not my first thoughts.

How do you know sound isn't working ?
What does pavucontrol show you ?
Could you try pulseaudio -k and report the error ?
Do you log in same flavor of kde5 (x11 vs wayland) ?

Sound isn't working because I can't hear anything.
Logging out and logging back in again cures it.

I'll try your suggestions next time this happens.
I am using Slackware 14.2 so it is kde 4.14.38, I assume X11
