Sound issues on upgrade from 9.0 to 9.1

I'm not really a huge linux nerd I've been takeing advatage of its many programming languages mostly so far so I dont know much...

in 9.0 everything worked great the sound and so fourt except it couldnt find my kernel sources so I went ahead and upgraded to 9.1 wich everything works fine except for my sound...it says something like it cant find a /etc/asound.state and it may be muted so I went into alsamixer like it suggested and unmuted everything but that didnt work (it told me to use a alsactl store to save the settings but bash didnt recognize the command)

I have onboard sound (Esoniq audio pci es) and I want to try and do this without recompileing my kernel (I have kernel 2.4.22 but recompileing the kernel is something I'm not good at )
