Sound gone since a while in VirtualBox 6 guests

I run Slackware64-14.2 with PulseAudio disabled and ALSA as suggested here:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ml#post5717778

Since a while (I believe since since VirtualBox 6.x version, but I don't remember exactly, and this is entirely my fault for not writing it down) the guests (both Linux and Windows) have no sound anymore. I have set ALSA as host driver and I'm sure back in VirtualBox 5.x I used to have sound everywhere.

My online searches gave me a lot of years old results for much older software versions so I eventually drowned up in them and gave up on searching further.

I have also tried to change the audio controller type in VirtualBox settings but it didn't help.

Is this a known VirtualBox 6.x bug? An issue of my particular pulse-free audio setup? Any hints about attempting to debug it somehow? And an additional question for those who run pulse-free -current: do you have sound in VirtualBox 6.x guests after disabling pulse using the approach Pat implemented for the next stable release?

Edit: I am using the blob installer from the VirtualBox website, not the OSE edition

Hello

I don't try have a direct answer, but try qemu instead.

I have found that at least for my main use case (testing a speaking installer) qemu is way better than VirtualBox for audio handling. And the Slint installer only ships Alsa.

My problem is "I need VirtualBox 6.x with sound working (again) in guests" rather than "I need sound working in guests, even if that means it can be qemu, not VirtualBox". I can't even go back to VirtualBox 5.x, because video performance is much worse for Windows 10 guests there (I believe there was some game changing improvement related to graphics controller in 6.x).

If you mean this part of it:

To fix this: Go to devicemgr in the Windows guest VM, right-click to the sound device, disable it. Then enable it. It should be working.
then I've just tried it and it did not work.

Another host OS and an older VirtualBox there, but it was worth trying anyway.
