Running Slack64-current and not exactly sure when this problem started (I'm usually downstairs letting the cat out when the box boots). It is minor but I'd like to resolve it. When I boot my machine the BIOS starts and after that, just before the grub menu appears, a very brief error appears. It is much too fast to read the whole thing but so far I have gotten -

Error: file / and then some path to a file presumably.

Searching this I have found several examples but they seem to lead to boot problems. In my case the Slackware grub screen appears and the system boots and runs normally thereafter.

It is possible that this started when I changed /etc/default/grub to show the Slackware grub splash screen but the items I added to /etc/default/grub are all present under /boot/grub. I've greped thru syslog, messages and dmesg output looking for the error but no luck. Does grub store error messages somewhere? Thanks for any pointers.

Are you getting the slackware splash sceen? It is probably a missing file or looking in wrong location for file when loading the splash screen possibly a missing font the theme.txt file is attempting to load.

Yes, the splash screen works fine and there are no boot problems. Thanks for your suggestion. Will have a look to see if everything is there.

Edit: Followed your suggestion and found that a gnu-unifont was missing from my system. Built/installed it from Slackbuilds.org. Will check when I boot again to see if that fixed it.

Edit2: Might have to get it and add to the fonts in the slackware directory under themes.

So, used grub-mkfont to generate the gnu-unifont.pf2 file but that didn't fix it. Now, after hitting reset many times when booting just before grub starts it appears to be something to do with a dejavu font in /boot/grub/.... Will continue to try to ferret it out on future boots. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Edit: If someone who is not seeing this fleeting error before grub starts could post a list of the files (just an ls -l) you have in /boot/grub/themes/slackware/ that would be appreciated to see if I am missing something or maybe one of the files is kaput. Thanks in advance.

I had that error pop-up before grub as well. I managed to make it go away by copying dejavusansmono.pf2 to /boot/grub/fonts. Here's an older post where I talked about that. https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...2/#post6052464
