slapt-get issues

I am (again) trying to get comfortable with Slackware.

Slapt-get looks like a good package manager, but I am having some strange issues.

First, using two different US repositories**, I get this error message:
Quote:
Failed to download: HTTP response code said error
. In both cases, I was able to go to the site in question and manually download the file.

The second issue is that it seemed that slapt-get was doing dependency resolution but then (for digikam) it did not. I had do install about 5 things manually (which is when I first noticed issue #1.

Are you positive the syntax was correct in the SOURCE lines? Could you post your slapt-getrc file?

As for dependency resolution, slapt-get uses hand-tuned metafiles which the packager needs to put in the package himeself. Official Slackware packages do not have these files, so they can never be required by any of the unofficial Slackware package repositories; this makes the system very capable and easy to implement, but unfortunately completely optional.

Though the two servers you link to are official mirrors...so I am not sure how the dependency resolution could have kicked in there.

This may seem like dumb question, but did you edit the slapt-getrc file to enable or add repositories?

I also found that some download locations may be down for a while. When I updated some of the unofficial locations, they worked at one time, at a later time I got an error when trying to update.

I have also found that some packages that are not from the official slackware repositories do not seem to install properly.

I therefore decided to stick with only the official repositories.

If I need other packages I try slackbuild.org, alian bob's repository, source, linuxpackages.net in that order.

Hope this helps

Dependency checking in slapt-get is iffy at best.

As suggested, post your slapt-getrc file. It's pretty easy to make a minor error in the source lines. Sometimes another pair of eyes can spot something quickly that you may be missing.

I'm starting over.....I was using "slackware-current" in the repositories. I had thought this was the same as 12.1, but then did a bit more reading.

Thanks for all the inputs
