Slackware Setup Help text needs an update, I think.

The Slackware Setup Help text includes the following snippet (the highlight is mine):
Code:
"Virtual" consoles and scrollback:

Right now, the screen you're looking at is probably VIRTUAL CONSOLE
NUMBER ONE, (or /dev/tty1 in Linux-speak). There are usually
several virtual consoles available. When you log into the install
disk, there are four consoles. To switch among them, use Alt-F1,
Alt-F2, Alt-F3, or Alt-F4 to select which of the four consoles you
wish to use. While you're using a console, you get a small amount
of text scrollback buffer. To scroll the console back, hold down
the right shift key and hit PageUp. To scroll the console forward,
hit PageDown while holding the right shift key down. This can be
especially useful for reading the boot messages, which can go by
too fast to read otherwise.
I don’t believe scrolling the console still works, or does it?
Looks like it should be removed, just in case someone happens to read it and gets confused.

I remember learning the trick after reading carefully everything I could for my first install! Memories...

It does not starting with 15, that is due to a Linux Kernel change. This was talked about in another thread.

TLDR: It works in pure text mode. It doesn't work if you use the frame buffer.

And not possible to avoid framebuffer in EFI I guess we have to boot in BIOS legacy mode

Wow... Imagine trying to explain that in the setup help text: "If you are running the installer in pure text mode, then scrolling will work. If, however, you are using the frame buffer, this feature will be unavailable to you."

Probably raises more questions than it answers. Furthermore, since more and more installs will be run under EFI anyway, it seems less and less applicable and useful to document, doesn't it?

This seems like one of those things in an installer that most reasonable people would bump into, but then write it off as an odd quirk and move on. But the average Influencer is not a reasonable person and would probably see this as an opportunity to laugh about how old Slackware is. Removing obsolete text would improve Slackware's "image" with little-to-no impact to functionality.

As I recall from the reviews of 15.0, nobody brought that one up. They were too busy complaining about things breaking while running inside a VM..

Is the "average Influencer" smart enough to know Slackware (or even Linux) exists? Me thinks you're giving them far too much credit, my friend.

Well, since the Slackware installer can be made to use pure text mode, is the comment really obsolete?

Having worked in a "consumer tech" type of shop when I was much younger, let me tell you this: Nobody reads instructions. Nobody brought it up because nobody read it.

Really? I don't seem to recall anything like that.

If you're installing Slackware in a VM, then you will have the option to use MBR. If you do that and choose non-KMS mode then the installer's scroll back will work. Furthermore, adding the "nomodeset" option to the kernel command line will give you the ability to use scroll back within your VM.

Nothing you said makes sense and it seems like you just want to fight, so I'll put it this way. Of the following options, which best describes the reason behind the stupidity of your comments?
  1. Drunk
  2. Bored
  3. Angry
  4. High (weed)
  5. High (hard drugs)
  6. Dementia
  7. Intentional Trolling

Remember - There are no bad answers. I know someone is gonna get mad at this and cry to the moderators but for real, you need to be ****ing slapped.

picking apart someone's post sentence-by-sentence like that is always rude. It destroys the context and doesn't add anything of value.
