What a mess..., it's a cracked logo?

I might work on an animation that spins the logo for use as a splash screen, if I get the time.

At the first attempt it clearly reads as "slamwars" (notice that it has word "slam" placed two times - one time normally and then upside-down ). The main principle of slackware is "KISS", and new logo doesn't fit in this principle, IMO. Logo should be something extremely simple, that you see once and will easily remember (forever). In this sense "S" logo was much better - it's just one letter and you could even reproduce it by hand.

to everyone crying and moaning over the New Flippy Slackware logo, get over it! it is just a logo, does it bother you that much? go snivel somewhere else, maybe the ubuntu forums will have compassion and send you an ubuntu CD, sheesh grow up already!

The effort to create the same spelling upside-down and backwards seems somewhat contrived, in my opinion (and that's all I'm offering here). No, I don't like it, but hey, it's still an unbranded distro (except for the LILO bootscreen).

After longer consideration, this is a load of fuss about nothing. As long as the distro itself doesn't deviate too much from what it is now, I can tolerate a try-to-be-trendy, arty-farty, twirly-whirly, flip-flop logo. It's only eye-candy, after all.

Agreed. Well-said. I'm not concerned about a logo change. We still have all of that Slackware goodness under the hood. Our OS hasn't changed.

I think 90% has replied just to share thoughs, which doesn't mean they can't live with new logo or something, so there is no need to say "get over it". It's linux anyway, if I won't like new logo at the time new version will be released, then I'll just replace it with something else.

Anyway, I think this thread will MUCH more useful if people who don't like logo will offer some kind of replacement (compatible with "upside down turn" ). I think it is logical because in linux things normally work in the way "if you don't like it - make it better".
There are other ways to make image "flippable" (extremely lame example is here). Or maybe original logo could be improved so it'll be more readable.

The logo is growing on me, I think. First impressions were negative, though.

How much do want to bet these are the same folks who said that Pat hadn't updated the website for so long that the project MUST be dead.



On a positive note, if this is all people can find to complain about when it comes to Slackware, then Pat and friends must be doing something right.

My girlfriend took a look at it and thought it was clever. But like me, neither positive nor negative.

To me it makes a statement Slackware is moving forward. Cutting edge KDE 4.1 and a new trendy logo. I'd like to see an artwork team. Nothing fancy, just a few icons and wall paper type of things.

At least it isn't crap-colored-brown

I love the idea of a CafePress store. Only wish it was Zazzle instead. They seem to have a few more options, plus if someone visits Zazzle from Pat's link and decide to create their own item, he still gets a few pennies from the sale

It is a bit difficult to read, and not recognizable as Slackware at first glance... yet.

Also gives the impression of being slanted 5 degrees down on the right side.

As with anything, most of the people who respond will have negative opinions.
How often do you call a store to say *good* things about the person who helped you?
How often do you call the telephone numbers on the back of trucks (you know, the ones that say "How's My Driving?") to say that the driver was doing an excellent job?

I suspect that most people either a) don't care either way as long as Slackware is Slackware, or b) like the new logo.

Unique? Look at the designers website - it's what they specialize in and most of them looks a LOT alike. Hardly unique.

Those of us who used GNOME went elsewhere (gware, Dropline, etc) and are quite aware of the current version. Just because Pat doesn't like it doesn't mean Slackware users who do have stopped using it.

I showed it to a couple of people after recently discovering it. One had the same reaction as "slamwars" (they didn't know what Slackware was). ANd someone who does know what Slackware is thought it looked more like "Slackwarz" (somehing I'd also heard on IRC). The latter I don't think is an image Pat wants to propogate for Slackware.

Indeed and first impressions can be decisive for new users, and you only get a chance to make that impression once. This is not going to contribute to Slackware being taken seriously by new users, in my opinion.

Frankly I like Slackware, I've been using it almost since it started - the diskettes are somewhere in the basement with my Yggdrasil set - but it isn't perfect and there are things that one could complain about, but as Pat runs Slackware the way Theo runs OpenBSD (which is entirely his prerogative ) there is little point.

Personally, I think it's a misguided attempt to join the cutesy logo crowd of distros, much like the version jump from 3.5-7, and while the controversy will die away it will have a negative impact on Slackware, however slight, amongst those using and promoting Slackware beyond the enthusiast audience.

For myself, I don't like the new logo. I think it looks like it was designed by a drunken chimpanzee (as I said on IRC), but the only person whose opinion counts is Pat's so while the thread lets us vent and express our displeasure, it's certainly not going to affect (in all probability) the status of the logo. Though it may result in a drop off in sales of branded merchandise.

So long as the quality of Slackware remains high the logo is really a minor stumbling block
