slackware as a router

just looking for where I should look to get started, ie, what man pages/files/applications should I look at to get started setting my slackware box up as my home router/gateway?

My basic setup is:
DSL ?modem? -> ethernet card in my slackware box

second ethernet card in my slackware box -> switch/hub -> multiple other computers

slackware machine will have 1 static ip and serve as DNS/Mail/web server as well as routing duties.

the other machines will probably all but 1 be windows boxes. I'd like to give them all static 'fake' ip's so that running samba I can get to files on them from outside (that's possible right?). Would also be nice if I could run a DHCP server to asign ip's to any other machines that might be temporarily on the network.

and yes, I know there's a networking forum Just wanted to make sure the answers I got were more slackware oriented.

I've used slackware as a router for quite some time now. I had Adelphia cable, before it went to shit and dialup was faster, and it worked wonderful on that. I also set my friend up a network on DSL where he lived. I started by looking at some How-To's on networking...and some other Slackware-specific sites.

http://linuxtipps.sourceforge.net/index.php

http://www.tldp.org/

Those are two good places to start out with...if you're looking for any specific information about Slackware and networking, just ask here, and I'm sure one of us will be able to help you.

thanks for the info

with that, and a couple other sources I found:
http://www.froggy.com.au/frogge/pepp...r_install.html

http://www.ecst.csuchico.edu/~dranch...ipmasq/c-html/

I think I'm set.. if only I could figure out why these drives won't format...

Well if you let the magic smoke out of them they won't work at all....See the magic smoke is what runs most electronics and once you let the magic smoke out of it, it won't work anymore.

I have found man pages to be short on info in general. I use the google.com search engine to find out alot of info. Do a search on dhcpd for info on howto setup a dhcp server. Search for using using IPCHAINS or IPTABLES for setting up your internal network as far as port forwarding and masquerading for machines on your internal network (ie DNS, WEBSERVER, MAILSERVER) and useing a firewall.

When it comes to Sambe the capabilities are endless...

Just to throw in my cents: Enabling file sharing on the internet is a big security risk. I would rather recommend you to have ssh running so you can get the files via sftp, or alternatively, running a ftp server on that machine might be better. On the other hand, you might want to use vpn to share your files. Just a thought
