Don't get me wrong, I would really like an open source driver for my nvidia card, but nouveau is not ready, no matter what you say, or if you agree. Even nv was more stable.
Well, if you mean that Nouveau is not suitable for every nVidia GPU, of course you are right.
Granted as well, the Nouveau kernel driver is not considered stable by its developers themselves (and Linus), which is illustrated by the fact that it lives in the "staging" area of the kernel tree. But that only mean that the ABI still is subject to change.
Should we conclude that Pat should have configured Slackware-13.37 in such a way that the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver be picked up by default at X startup? I still don't think so, because:
1) Nouveau works for me
2) The more people try Nouveau and report the issues they encounter, the faster the developers will be able to close it.
About using a testing kernel, you could try this:
1) make and install a 2.6.39-rc6 (as of today) kernel, using one of the config files available in /mirror/testing/source/linux-2.6.39-rc4-configs
2) upgradepkg /mirror/testing/packages/libdrm-2.4.25-i486-1.txz
3) upgradepkg /mirror/testing/packages/mesa-7.10.2-i486-1.txz # optional
4) upgradepkg /mirror/testing/packages/xf86-video-nouveau-git_20110417_8378443-i486-1.txz
5) cross your fingers
6) (re)start X
Please note that you should use at least a 2.6.38 kernel to use xf86-video-nouveau-git_20110417_8378443-i486-1.txz for one of the nv50 or nvC0 cards if you use mesa, according to the developers, see http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/MesaDrivers

While checking my mail just now, I was delighted to see that the postman has just delivered my totally awesome official Slackware 13.37 DVD straight from the Slackware Store! I had pre-ordered Slack 13.37 back when 13.37 beta had just been released.
Has anyone else received received their CDs or DVD yet?
Meanwhile, I am still seeding my Slackware64 13.37 iso that I downloaded. I'm up to 14GB worth now. I'm proud to be able to support Slackware any way I can.

Reason: to fix a careless typo!

I just got my DVD! Have had a subscription for a few releases now.
Not yet...think it's about half way over the Atlantic now tied to the leg of a seagull.
I didn't know about the ecofriendly airmail option. Might request that next time in place of the stylish seamail option where the shipment is carried by 1337 playfully porpoising penguins.
