I installed slackware 13.0 on a toshiba nb100 netbook with 1Gb RAM and 1.6Ghz processor and I have the following problem:
after starting X with KDE 4.2.4, it takes ages to launch any application. Even starting X is a painful procedure, where everything freezes until I move the mouse cursor.
Running top I see that 850Mb of memory are used, 0Mb of swap and 10% of CPU. So I understand that there should be no problem...
Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening? Any suggestions on fixing it?
Have you tried disabling the compositing? Run the following command (from xfce, if KDE's too painful):
Code:
bash-prompt$~ systemsettings
Then in Desktop > Desktop Effects under the General tab, untick the Enable Desktop Effects box, click apply and then try logging in to KDE again. If things are better, you can leave it as is. Otherwise, it sounds like X isn't using the right driver for your card. What graphics card do you have and which driver is X using?
Thank you very much for the answer. As you suggested, I disabled the Desktop Effects, but still I get the same problem. What I find weird is that if I am moving the cursor everything runs fine.
My graphics card is Intel 945E.
In the xorg.conf file, under
"Device" I find
Hmmm. I've got a 945G and KDE's fine. I, however, don't have an xorg.conf - I let HAL figure it out for me. Have you tried renaming xorf.conf to xorg.conf.bak and restarting X? Perhaps the autoconfiguration would work better?
Let's see.. have the 945GME chipset, enable_mtrr_cleanup in lilo.conf, no xorg.conf whatsoever and the 2.8.1 intel driver from /extra.
glxgears gives me low fps but I don't care, for video and effects: flawless.
