Does anyone know if there are any good reasons flac is still and 1.1.2, even though 1.1.4 is available?
Several applications in Slackware that are linked to the flac libraries are not ready yet for this version. The waiting is for these apps to be adapted to the new major library version.
Juk, and possibly libtunepimp and libmusicbrainz are affected.
We do have Xorg 7.3. Or does it being a pre-,beta whatever doesn't count?
AFAIK the -current entry on Distrowatch shows 7.3 but 7.3 isn't out until August. I was under the impression before that Pat was waiting for 7.3 to come out before finishing up and doing the RC routine, but since 7.3 got pushed back to August (was previously May) I figured that he'd just be using the stable 7.2 and go on with the RC, maybe leaving 7.3 as an update or new (sub)version (12.1).
Then the entry on Distrowatch announcing the 12.0RC1 specifically says 7.2, but who knows if that's right (I'd assume it is).

And that's what makes Slackware so good: It is so well maintained by some people who really check all this so that the rest of us just can lay back and just depend on a consistent system that simply works!
The only reason for a jump to 12, rather than 11.1 is most likely due to three things: 2.6 default kernel now, hal, and dbus. Or is there something else too?
For me there is 'something else' like Apache 2.2. We've some tenths of web sites using Apache 1.3.* with mod_perl on two web servers. We've been reviewing the code (mainly Perl) since Pat moved httpd to n/ in -current. Not that we're having problems, but it's a lot of _not_ planned effort to do this year. Oh well, life is all about challenges. :-)
Of course, our desktops will have a better look. But does it really matter? After all, everything is working very well. Maybe we're going to delay the move until the end of the year. We'll see.
I am very excited about this release and am going to probably wait for a later RC or maybe the final so that I download the DVD only once and share it forever and ever on bittorrent. This is sounding like one of the best releases I have ever heard of. The fork distros are going to be great as well. I want to try a new dracolinux release based on this.

Waiting for the slackstore to be updated so I can buy a subscription...
Yep, I discovered the same thing. I want to support Slackware with a subscription, but I already bought 11.0 DVD last year during the pre-sale, so I want to sign up on the subscription when 12.0 becomes an option.

A "fork distro" is a distro that at one point in time decides to use another distro as it's base and from that point on becomes an independant distro and makes it's own decisions in how that distro must evolve. The parent distro and the fork will grow apart more and more over time.
The distros you are referring to are what should be called "vulture distros" since all they do is wait for Slackware to evolve, then pick the cherries out of the new releases and re-stamp it with their own extensions. This is basically letting someone else do the dirty work for you because you're too lame to think for yourself.

I think that's not a fair comment. Guys on Slax - I don't know the others - have been doing a great work there. Their LiveCD really helps (me) to show somethings Linux can do and how it looks like. If customers go serious about moving to Linux, then Slackware comes as a solution. A LiveCD is usefull - at least to me; if it is based on Slackware than that's better.
