Slackware commentary on DistroWatch

There's a pretty good commentary on the future of Slackware over on DistroWatch:

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20050124#1

It's realistic and optimistic at the same time.

Its strange that the picture shows Slackware running Gnome, when i heard several times that Pat's considering removing Gnome from the distribution.

Nevertheless, nice article. The community, along with the creator or maintaner make a perfect distro, and from what i see, slackware has a very good community.

I wonder how many of Slackware's GNOME users run dropline-gnome rather than the original. That would probably decide that particular question.

i don't use gnome, but i think if it's gonna get dropped it will happen in v11... point releases (such as v10.1) tend to not include such drastic changes...

as for the article on distrowatch, i don't know much about the gentoo community, but i think comparing slackware's with debian's is like comparing apples and oranges, IMHO...

the centralized nature of slackware is it's biggest weakness - but that centralized nature is also what has given slackware most of the characteristics that we slackers love - so it's a catch 22 situation...

i know several admins who've recently removed slackware from the company servers and moved to debian, not because they don't like slackware (they love it), but simply because the crisis slackware has gotten into has been a HUGE WAKE-UP CALL...
