what do you mean by 'it'? do you mean the hardware or something that i have to just get right in the os or bios.
anyway i have almost given up on slackware.
and just to repeat again: i face no such problems when i stop running slackware. if i just stick to win xp, fedora, ubuntu, suse.. everything goes well. i haven't tried the last 2 on my new hardware but i did on the prev. one and faced no such problems. i've also been using freebsd (great now 'od .' doesn't give me 'not a directory' thing) and some minix for around 20-25 days. and their use doesn't seem to cause any problem.
there is another thing i've noticed a fresh install of slackware behaves quite well for the first 5-6 8-10 days (depending upon how much i use it).
I don't understand how a Slackware install can be doing this ... let's see ...
I see that you are chainloading grub to lilo, right ? That's not a good idea ... just use grub. Add an entry for slackware in the menu.lst, wherever that might be. I would recommend using only grub or only lilo, preferably only grub.
So, do that and see if it helps.

well the only linux distro on my hard disk at the present moment is slackware. i'm using lilo to chainload ntldr & freebsd's bootloader.
i'll try that anyway.
but this solution started causing another problem:
sometimes when i start my system from cold i get absolutely no display (it doesn't even get to displaying bios messages)and hardly any hard disk activity. though the green lights on my motherboard get turned on and the fans on the cpu and psu start spinning. i have to turn it off and on several times to get it running.
my config:
intel d865gbf motherboard, p4 3.0 GHz(prescott), 256MB DDR RAM, 80 GB seagate barracuda, retech 8139d(gets recognized as sundance st201 in linux) ethernet card, cooler master 380pmsr.
windows xp, fedora core 4, slackware 10.2. using lilo. with ntldr and grub chainloaded.
Well, I just had the same problem on an office system this week.
System would not boot. No bios messages but everything turns on. It just doesn't go anywhere, blank screen.
It's a symptom typical of a faulty power supply that works intermitently.
So I replaced the power supply.
But it wasn't it.
Turned out the problem went away after I changed an old, cheapo, early revision Dlink network card.
I also put the card in a different pci slot.
Basicaly what you might be experiencing is either an intermitent hardware failure, most likely power supply or the mobo. Or a conflict between one of the pci cards and the mobo, they don't share resources well.
So try to swap your pci cards around into different slots. That would be my first test.
BTW, after reading your recent post about the hardware change I guess you'll be dealing with different problems now related to the crappy ATI hardware you chose.
Why oh why do people get this ATI crap?
Especially if you run Linux, you need to stay away from anything that has ATI logo on it.
Good Luck.
It seems to me that this is a hardware issue.
My sugestions would be:
- check memory with memtest+ 1.65 and if it's faulty change it;
- try to change the PSU;
- try to reinstall your OS's cause they might be corrupted.

I definitely agree. (I don't even trust AMD anymore (not that I ever did), but now that they're with ATI ...)
Why exactly would you want to disable acpi and use apm instead?
not that i want to do it. i thought hey why not try it, it might just solve my problem. it didn't. it caused some other problems and i ended up enabling acpi in bios again.
about the hardware...
i find my new board to be far more stable then the crap intel board based on 865g that i previously had. i also feel its faster. i was able to hit a 25% overclock with my 3200+( 2.0 to around 2.5GHz) with some generic slightly cheapish RAM. plus it doesn't overheat, i guess it will also run with that no name cheap SMPS that i still have lying around. also no problems with drivers. i just have to select it in xorgsetup or i can just install the ati one. improves 2D performance and i don't care about 3D so no headaches there. and it costed me around 2500 IRS (thats around 54 dollars). i can now kill covenants without even a graphics card which was almost impossible on 865g.

i have tried all of these already.
also i don't have any card plugged into any of the pci slots.
