Looks like it was just the slackware-current packages. I tried them again on a clean 10.2 without upgrading X first and couldn't load X needing some stdc++ library. Pulled those off and took the kde from the kde web site and it works fine. New drive is installed and I'm copying my data back over from the old one now. This new laptop drive is so much quieter than the tochiba I had in there too.

The other qusetion is should I report the buggy X back to pat at slackware? I added a comment to the bug report on Xorg's bugzillia but I wonder if there is any feedback patch for slakware.
