But I do. Just downloaded 48MB of updates today, in order to stay "bleeding edge" running 2.6.15, always doing my best to push the limits, and everything usually works (with a minor tweak here and there) OK. But when it comes to KDE, here comes trouble. The funny part is I rarely use it (lynx generally suits my needs) But "she who must be obeyed" likes a windows like gui so there it is. That's why I even bother with it.

Hi,
I have succesfully managed to compile 3.5.1 and am having a hard time adjusting the configuration scripts.
@Raska:
could you help me with the post-install steps?
I have slackware 10.2.
Did everything post-install wise but I keep getting 3.4!
I guess if I can find out how I can do manually what xwmconfig does then I'm ok, as the new 3.5.1 of course is not listed there!
Thanks a lot in advance,
Marinus.

Here's a way after compiling KDE 3.5 Which is a bit of a hack but it seems to work.
1) copy the directory /opt/kde to something like kde3.4.2 (this is for back up purposes)
2) Copy the directory with kde 3.5.1 to the same location as "kde"
3) start the Xserver up
I've done it and it seems to work fine. It's inelegant but I personally have not been able to figure out to correctly configure the machine to load the correct version of kde the right way

Hey Slick,
thanks for your answer!
I have just found /etc/profile.d/ and adjusted kde.sh and kde.csh to the new KDE location of /opt/kde3.5.1
and....
IT WORKS
Funny that that isn't mentioned anywhere, at least I haven't found that.
Thanks...
Marinus.

Marinus,
Are you using the Xserver login screen?
I followed the directions for your solution but there is an issue when enabling the graphical login.
Do you have this problem too?
Let me know

Running KDE 3.5.1, artsd crashes under normal 'user' usage - it works perfectly for 'root'.
Any ideas? (It happens on my laptop and desktop, both Slack 10.1, with 2.6.15.4 & .5 kernels respectively.)

Anyone who has installed kde 3.5.1 from slackware-current, can you do it without upgrading X from -current? I upgraded X and found out that there is a resume bug in the i810 drivers so I need to stick with the 6.8.2 X from 10.2 but want to run kde 3.5.1.
Also when I list /var/log/packages I see the packages for both kde 3.5.1 and kde 3.4.2, should I be removing kde 3.4.2 first?

I have a dual boot at work that uses the i810 And it works perfectly with 3.5.1....well all but the graphical login.
All I did is use the Konstruct program from KDE and then followed Marinus's advice (Post #19) I would start with the konstruct program before you do too much tinkering. If you have a slow machine it will take a while though. One of those things you setup for overnight.
Let me knwo how it turn out

Hey Slick666,
I just use startx and that works out of both root and any user.
I have just once tried the graphical login, on 3.4.1 but didn't see any use for it.
If you find out how you can use it then let me know.
Marinus.

So your still on xorg 6.8.2 then? The packages in -current must have some sort of strange dependency on the newer X. I'll swap in my other drive and try again and if it doesn't work then when I get my new drive, just compile everything.

I haven't tried this one, since i'm upgrading my X before i upgrade my KDE, but as the changelog says :
Quote:
For those who may not be aware, this is is the exact same code base as X11R7.0.0, but is packaged as the traditional single source archive using the imake build system.
|
So, i thought that it wasn't the X which causes the problem, since basically, it was the same X packages

usually i use upgradepkg, NOT installpkg when upgrading packages

I used pkgtool, not sure what difference that makes.
I downloaded the packaged from the links on the kde website and use upgradepackage on my test drive and it worked correctly, there must be something odd about the packages in slackware-current.
Thanks for the help, My new drive comes tomorrow so I can set it up correctly.

I mean it may not be ideal but it was very simple and straight forward for me.
Let me know how it turns out.
