Slackware 10.0 questions -N00b

Hi,

I've installed latest version of the Slackware available (from the Slackware Current) using customs amde ISO image.

Here are my questions:

- How can I check the package dependencies prior to install ?

- How I can determine which dependencies of the package I want to install are already installed on my system ?

- I would like to install package called gnome-ppp to provide a GUI dialer for my system. But is requests for additional Gnome(which I've not installed on my system) packages. I do not want Gnome, just a dialer how can I do that ?

Thanks for help !

Sader

as i am sure you have figured out, there is no official dependency checker for slack. If you are installing something built against gnome it should work assuming that you have gnome installed. The dependency checkers/installers that are out there are swaret, slapt-get, and slackpkg. I have used them all and swaret is the best. I would only use these for offical upgrades, no 3rd repositiories. Install everything else from the .tgz or tarball packages by hand. Be careful when upgrading from 10 to current. Read the changelog and know what you are getting yourself in to.
