How would i make shortcuts to let's say applications i installed... let's say i wanted to make a shortcut to gaim (if i just downloaded it from internet)?

You're probably wanting to create a launcher for it.

You didn't mention your desktop environment .

I don't use kde. What happens if you right click on the panel? Do you get "Add new Launcher" or anything similar?

you right click your mouse on the desktop and chose create new
and press link to application!!
