Settings daemon problem

Hi everyone,

Just a couple of days into running slack 10.1 and having great fun with it. I have a gnome bug that has me baffled though, as gnome loads I get the following error dialogs.

"There was an error starting the gnome settings daemon. Some things, such as themes, or background settings may not work correctly. The settings daemon restarted too many times. The last error message was : Child process did not give aan error message, unknown failure occured. Gnome will try to restart the settings daemon next time you log in."

Sure enough, bless his little cotton socks, Gnome does try to restart the settings daemon everyt time I log in, but always with the same out come, and sure enough the desktop themes settings don't work.

The other dialog is as follows:

"The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFID:GNOME_Mixer applet".
Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration."

I did a search of the forums on these errors and they have been posted previously. On that occasion no one had any ideas so I thought I'd post them myself in the hope I might have more luck.

The version of slackware I'm working with is 10.1 and my sys spec is as follows:

Motherboard: K7S8X
SiS900 Fast ethernet
ASRock insound controller
Graphics: High tec information radeon VE
Monitor: Relisys C708 17"
CPU: Athlon 2400xp
hdd: Maxtor 40 Gb 7200rpm
CD read/write
DVD read
floppy 3.5"

Thanks everyone

regards

Draiocht

Hi!

This seems to be a problem with the gstreamer package of Slackware 10.1

Two solutions offered in this thread on a.o.l.s. are:

Remove the offending library:
Code:
cd /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.8/
mv libgstxine.so libgstxine.so.null
Or:
Upgrade gstreamer, by removing the installed package, and then downloading and installing a more recent version

Hope this helps,

Eric

Smile Thanks

Hi Bob, and thanks for the info.

I read an article last night that pointed out that Slack is more geared towards running kde than gnome, and since I haven't been using LINUX long enough to have a real preference, and there were a few other things that I wished I had done differently on my first successful install I re installed opting for kde. Having said that I don't want to rule out gnome for the future so I have saved your post and will keep it for future reference. So thanks for that, it will save me from looking completely gormless by returning here with the same question in a few months time.

Regards,

Draiocht
