I installed gnome-2.10, and when I startx, I get a strange error, described here

I did some investigating, and it seemed like this error happened a lot with redhat users (I'm using Slackware), and what seemed to solve their problems was installing the package gnome-control-center. I installed this, but the problem still remains.
With this error, I can't change most things about gnome, such as themes (hence the horrid look of my desktop) or screensavers.
Any suggestions?
