sata11 drives and kernel 2.4

Having considerable problems installing slackware 11 on a new system that uses the latest sata2 drives. It appears that those drives can't be seen unless kernel 2.6
is used. And I say that as the installation process doesn't even see these new sata2 drives unless hugh26.s or other optional choices are used to start the installation process. Otherwise the installation process stops where it can't find the drives..

My question and my problem is, I need to use a 2.4 kernel to run some of my applications. What can I do to make this possible?

Failing that - does anyone know how to setup a linking process under a 2.6 kernel using the former pty/tty 'tunnel' selections? Kernel 2.6 no longer uses the pty/tty files so I am forced to stay with a 2.4 kernel.

Another thought is to replace these NEW sata2 drives with older ATA drives. But that is going backwards??

Any thoughts on my delemna would be appreciated..

Again, sounds like the motherboard chipset is not supported by the 2.4.33.3 (sata.i) kernel which is now the default kernel for Slackware 11 installations.

Perhaps you'll have to install using test26.s and then get a newer 2.4.x kernel that supports your motherboard chipset and compile it yourself.

One more note. It's 'SATA II' and not 'SATA 11'.

Thanks for the thoughts and correction on SATA 11 vs SATA II.

I was thinking of compiling up a 2.4 kernel but I can't get test26.s to see the network cards. Seems that this installation of Slackware is worst than pulling teeth.

I have no idea what I am going to do now. But I must say that Fedora Core 6 installed perfectly with all ports and extras working - but again it was a 2.6 kernel which won't work with my linking needs. (ptty/tty stuff)..

That is why I had selected Slackware for the job. It comes with 2.4.33.3 as the base kernel. Just perfect for my needs. And now this new hardware (sata II drives) just messaged everything up..

Thanks again for the input..

It's highly doubtful the SATA II drive is the problem. The issue here is that the 2.4.33.3 installation kernel is not properly supporting the motherboard chipset you are using.

What motherboard are you running? Nforce5, Intel P965?

The motherboard is a 'MSI-K9VGM-V'

Looks like the motherboard uses the Via KM890 chipset which should be supported by the Slackware 11 installer. The default kernel for install is sata.i.

Are you trying to find the drive at /dev/hdX or /dev/sdX? Have you tried 'dmesg | grep hd' to determine which hard drives are being detected? Try looking through the scroll buffer to determine if the HD is even being detected by the OS.

The Drives are found just fine, if I use test26 or hugh26 kernels to get things going. Everything goes on just fine, but now there are NO MODULES!! But that is not entirely true. There are modules but they are from 2.4.33.3. And the kernel I am using is 2.6.18. Result - nothing works because of the lack of modules..

And on top of that - I went to the /usr/src directory and I can only find a kernel for 2.4.33. Nothing there for any 2.6 kernels.

Now what? I thought that if you told Slackware that you wanted to use a 2.6 kernel that it would install the appropriate modules??? Whats wrong here??

The modules for the 2.6.18 kernel are in /testing/. I believe they are on the 4th CD. Install those along with the kernel headers and source.
