So right now I have a working Ubuntu 22.10 / samba 4.17.4 provisioned ad-dc ... on a virtbox .
I'm doing the Pepsi Challenge ... ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiO_JES4yBY )
The slack15-current looks good with the samba 4.17.4 build included (current Kernel 6.1.6 has no zfs support yet)... ...
Also the mint21.1 looks interesting ... For me, a Slackware transition is still the best choice.

The built-in samba tests as far as summary reporting have alot to be desired ( if a test fails , well what does that mean ? Was a component missing ) I run the make quicktest and always get one error which seems to be a missing piece. On the full test I get many errors.
... the vfs (virt file system) makes me a little queasy.

It looks like depending on the build and the options, the old machines won't authenticate without special treatment or not at all .

Since some version(s) of Samba SMBv1 is disabled by default. If you live in a safe network where everyone can be trusted SMBv1 can be enabled in smb.conf with:

Code:
client min protocol = NT1
server min protocol = NT1

Its probably a little late in the game , but is there a comprehensive slackware/samba install instructions/guide ? I haven't seen any u-tubes for slack15/Samba .

I am concerned that my pam setup changes are not correct or up to date ... Many of the instructions seem to be for previous versions.

The reason for the MIT version 20 years ago was the fact it had ( or could be built with ) the domestic heavy encryption ... Is there any difference today ? Do you really need it ?

A worst case scenario : 2 months ago:
