Adding a shared printer. "SPNEGO login failed: Logon failure".Unknown option

hello,
i have 3 machines on the network.
the "server" (192.168.1.204) is hosting a printer to which i have been unsuccessfully connecting past 4 hours from "toshiba"(192... 201). I also have a "raspberry"(192..150). Raspberry is a completely standard installation - e,g. i made no changes to the distributive, but set it up to be on the network.

server runs RH65. Toshiba is Fedora 22.
all firewalls are down.
i can print to the local printer from "server".
I can not see a list of shares (and printer) from "toshiba" , yet i can mount (server's) directories over @ toshiba.
Code:
"toshiba"
[root@toshiba ~]# smbclient -d3 -L server

Use cups instead of samba. Make sure that cups is running on all computers.

On the server using the web browser enter url localhost:631. Then select the Administration page and share printers attached to this computer.

On the Toshiba and Pi do the same thing but select show printers shared by other computers. You should now be able to printer from either to the server.

thank you for the input.
Have CUPS running on the server and the printer is set as "shared".

but on Toshiba's cup page i don't see anything that would allow me to browse to the host and pick the shared printer. See attached screenshot.

this is what i get on Toshiba for earlier added printer:
Code:
[root@toshiba ~]# service cups status

on the server - yes,
on toshiba - no. the log i posted - I had to copy/paste information from the server to toshiba in a futile attempt to get it to work. Since then i removed the printer confg from(on) toshiba

Another thing - i don't see where do i enable "select show printers shared by other computers.". nothing on the front page ( see attahed)

avahi must be running on the toshiba to see the shared printers. You should be able to manually add the printer using the url:

ipp://server/printers/printer_name

oh. jeez.. i have it installed but it is _not_ running. Have to look into what is this and why i (might) want it.

still no love - i added manually, and when i sent to test print - nothing was printed. see attached.
I can not locate an error_log on the toshiba even thought it is set to "debug".

there is something odd on the server's cups. the debug_level is set to "debug", but in error_log:

You really need to be using cups 1.6+ for the server if you want to take advantage of using avahi in a native fashion. (There are workarounds, but IIRC cups-browsed is then required to support the newer clients when working with old CUPS servers). Is it viable for you to upgrade the CUPS server?

The latest version in the RH6 is 6.7, im on 6.6. Cups 1.6 is available on 7 only. And i really don't feel like moving to 7 just because of this print nonsense... Just too much work.
Since the env is rather stable - home office, i'm not too concern about avahi not functioning as expected. For all practical reasons i can have it down with little effect on daily use (if at all).

but do i have to have cups 1.6 to be able to print from 2.0?

In order for the newer clients to be able to browse for local printers using the deprecated CUPS protcol, you need to use 'cups-filters-cups-browsed'

Quote:
Since CUPS >= 1.6 the CUPS Browsing functionality is dropped in CUPS. The OpenPrinting cups-browsed is a daemon running in parallel to the CUPS daemon to provide again basic CUPS Browsing functionality. This way basic CUPS Browsing works on clients with CUPS >= 1.6 when there are remote CUPS servers of CUPS version 1.5 and older in the network. For each reported remote CUPS queue cups-browsed creates a local raw queue pointing to the remote queue so that it appears in local print dialogs and is also available for printing via the command line. Also high availability with redundant print servers is supported. If there is more than one server providing a print queue with the same name, cups-browsed uses the first queue which appears and if this queue disappears, cups-browsed switches to the queue of another server. Load-balancing (what CUPS <= 1.5 did via implicit classes) is not supported with cups-browsed.

Ferrari,michaelk:
this was it.
The moment i brought the cups-browsed service up, the printer was automagically discovered and added to cups config.

Thank you very much for your help gents!

For those who might come here for help:
on fedora you need to configure cups-browsed.conf. It is pretty self documented.
then enable cups-browsed service and start it:
systemctl enable cups-browsed.service
systemctl start cups-browsed.service

cups-broswed.conf is owned by cups-filters-1.4.0-1.fc22.x86_64.
There is _no_ cups-filters-cups-browsed rpm for Fedora.
i'm not sure if i must have avahi running, but i do have it running and it is too late (night) to figure out the relation of it to "Browsed" service.
Also there is a bug 985603 discussion on the RH that is useful.

P.S. I'll update the subject of this thread to better fit the issue.

To clarify a little further here, start 'cups-browsed' on your Fedora machine with
Code:
sudo systemctl enable cups-browsed
Code:
sudo systemctl start cups-browsed
Code:
sudo systemctl restart cups
Now he remote CUPS printers should be visible on the local machine. Check with
Code:
lpstat -t
The 'cups-browsed' manpage is worth reading for more information
Quote:
NAME
cups-browsed - A daemon for browsing the Bonjour broadcasts of shared, remote
CUPS printers

SYNOPSIS
cups-browsed [-v | -d | --debug] [--autoshutdown=mode]
[--autoshutdown-timeout=timeout]

DESCRIPTION
cups-browsed has three independently switchable functions:

1. Browse Bonjour broadcasts of remote printers and create/remove local raw
queues pointing to these printers.

2. Browse CUPS broadcasts of remote printers and create/remove local raw
queues pointing to these printers.

3. Broadcast local queues with the CUPS protocol.

Note that 2. and 3. are only to allow communication with legacy CUPS servers
(1.5.x or older) on the remote machine(s). The standard method to broadcast
for shared/network printers to broadcast their presence is Bonjour. The CUPS
broadcasting/browsing protocol is deprecated.
