runlevel 4 problem

hi all

i have a big problem there..

i wanted to boot straight into kde... so i did the following:

i've opened /etc/inittab and changed from:

Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
to

Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:4:initdefault:
after that i've opened rc.4

and i commented the first lines about GNOME like that:

Code:
# Try to use GNOME's gdm session manager:
  #if [ -x /usr/bin/gdm ]; then
  # exec /usr/bin/gdm -nodaemon
  #fi

  # Not there? OK, try to use KDE's kdm session manager:
  if [ -x /opt/kde/bin/kdm ]; then
    exec /opt/kde/bin/kdm -nodaemon
  fi

  # If all you have is XDM, I guess it will have to do:
  if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm ]; then
    exec /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon
  fi
then i rebooted my system:

Code:
INIT: cannot execute etc/rc.d/rc.4
INIT: cannot execute etc/rc.d/rc.4
INIT: cannot execute etc/rc.d/rc.4
INIT: Id "x1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
tried to boot with a cd, same thing

any ideas how to recover my system?

Maybe you changed the exec status of rc.4 when you edited it? Try booting with the install CD. Mount your filesystem under /mnt and chmod the rc.4 back to executable if that's the case. BTW, to boot to level 4 you didn't need to modify rc.4, and if you don't have gnome, it wouldn't have made any difference....

I would boot a LiveCD. Then edit /etc/inittab back to default runlevel 3. Then boot Slackware.

Once you get into Slackware then check to see if /opt/kde/bin/kdm exists and is executable. Also check to see if /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm exists and is executable but xdm is less important to solving your problem than kdm.

How about just selecting runlevel 1 from the LILO console. When you select a kernel in LILO, hit tab to get the console, then just add the number 1 after the kernel name. That will boot you into runlevel 1 and you can fix what you need. No need for a LiveCD.

thank you!! like mostlyharmless suggested - i mounted the system with a cd and checked if rc.4 is executable... and it wasn't (i have absolutely no idea why - i didn't change the mode)

so i fixed that too easily, this time - false alert

thank you all again!

and good night
