New Install of PCLinuxOS boots into runlevel 3. Should be runlevel 5

Hi all,

I just installed PCLinuxOS on an old laptop to explore it. After the install it booted into runlevel 5 (X11) without issues. I shut it down last night after making a few changes to the System services. I booted it today and it went to runlevel 3. I logged in and launched kde from the cli then promptly checked inittab which says runlevel 5. Has anyone else come across this and know how to fix it? In the meantime I will reboot and see what happens.

After a reboot it goes to runlevel 5. The only difference I made was plugging in the power adapter to charge the battery. So is runlevel 5 disabled when the laptop is on battery?

Many distributions are set to boot into fail-safe (sometimes called single user) mode when Linux runs into a major problem while attempting to boot. fail-safe mode would run at level 3. So it is possible that your machine experienced some sort of problem due to low power and booted into fail safe mode.

In inittab it says runlevel 3 is multi-user. When it booted it gave me a login prompt. Doesn't look like single user mode to me. I could be wrong though.

Just booted using the battery and it started X and kdm so I'll accept the failsafe argument. Either way it's not really a big deal... I was just curious
