QUESTION! more DVD crap to think about...

I've seen so many posts on linuxquestions.org about DVD-burning software, but no one actually gives an answer to my liking. I don't know, maybe there isn't a good answer to this question: I want to burn DVD data discs and compile DVD-video discs (nothing illegal) in linux. I use Nero in windows, but I got the software free with my DVD-writer, and don't have a "liscense" directly from Nero that I can use to download the Linux edition. So I want to find a cheap or preferably FREE open source edition of DVD-writing software for Linux. In other words, I don't want to spend $70+ on software to record data-dvds. That definitely eliminates LinuxNero and GEAR. Any answers???

You can even get the slack package from the slack mirrors under extras

this may seem like a very trivial question, but my understanding of linux is full of holes, so I'm gonna ask anyway. When I attempt to install K3b, it says that I must give the program "root permissions" in order to function correctly. Normally, I know how to configure file permissions using chmod in command form, but this one's got me stumped.

Install K3B as root and run the app K3bSetup to define user that can run K3B.

Just run the k3bsetup2 app that came with k3b. It will set the needed permissions for you.

don't know why the software only burns at 1.3x though. I have dma set to "on," and I have a 16x DVD burner using 8x DVDs. So why is it only burning at 1.3x???? I saw some posts that say to update the dependent packages, but I just installed the software TODAY, and it still burns freaking slow. It's not running in scsi emulation mode either. already checked hdparm.

Slackware's package system doesn't install dependencies when you install a package. A TGZ file is basically just a tarball that contains the files that get installed when you do "make install" with source installation.

It's entirely possible that you still need to update the other packages.

I use k3b for burning data dvds and lxdvdrip for ripping/burning movie dvds.
After flashing the firmware of my (pioneer 108) dvd drive, dvd movies burn at 8x using memorex 8x dvd-r disks.
Both k3b and lxdvdrip must be set to 1x burn speed for ritek 8x dvd-r disks, then they burn at 4x.

I got the firmware at

it shouldn't be a firmware problem. DVDs burn at 8x in windows, so I know the firmware is up to date. Also, I'm pretty sure I already updated the dependent packages alone, so that shouldn't be the problem either.

Unhappy

freaking a.... why does the software only burn DVDs at 1.5x??? my roomate has this problem with Windows too. We thought there might be a problem with DMA not being supported, but I ran hdparm /dev/cdrom and determined that DMA was set to "1" enabled. ARGGHHHH. Both cdrdoa and cdrecord are up to date, and the firmware is just fine. What's the deal?

I should add that I have a Memorex DVD+/-R(w) dual format, dual layer dvd recorder. The DVDs that I am using are TDK DVD-R. I have two DVD-drives, and the configuration isn't slave/master: it's the "other one" (the third setting on the jumpers, I don't really know the setting but I do know that the drives came installed in the computer as such).

I have a cdrw drive as well as the dvd drive, and they are also "cable select", so that's not the problem.

Have you tried another medium? That seems to be the only difference that I found that limits burning speed.

I've tried Maxwell DVD-R 8x discs as well. Same problem. I'm starting to think that there is not a single person who knows how to solve this problem, judging by the 30 or so "unsolved posts" about k3b.

WilliamS, what kernel are you running?

I'm using the stock kernel, 2.4.29 IIRC.

Maybe a bug in growisofs, as I must select burnspeed 1, to get 4x.
