Problems with kde using 2.6.12.1

Been having a weird problem with KDE 3.4.1 using the 2.6.12.1 kernel

When I log onto the desktop the selected background comes up, but when I right-click on the desktop the background turns black, instead of the menu popping up.

It doesn't do this if I reboot and use the 2.4.31 kernel.

Don't think I had this problem with 2.6.12 kernel and I used the same .config file.

Everything else with KDE seems fine.

Even did a recompile of 2.6.12.1 using a config file from 2.6.11.12 with the same results in KDE when I right-click.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Gary

P.S. Occurs with either a ps2 mouse (since 2.4.31 doesn't recognize my wireless MS usb mouse) or with the usb mouse, but again both mice are fun with the stock kernel.

A little more clarification on the problem.

Noticed that I cannot use K3b either. Whether I use the kde start menu to start k3b or from a terminal console by /opt/kde/bin/k3b, the k3b splash screen disappears with an error like cannot start kdeinit

Everything is fine, both right-clicking on the kde desktop and using k3b, both as root and user with 2.6.11.12 kernel. I recompiled both 2.6.12 & 2.6.12.1 without success. Something has changed in the .12 series.

I even used the .config from the 2.6.11.12 which works fine. Used make oldconfig and let it show me the changes in the 2.6.12.x kernel to see if something popped which I could recognize as needed for kde that I'm forgetting to select, but nothing obvious showed up.

Any ideas

Gary

I have been having a similar problem with my 2.6.10 kernel. My wife decided she just HAD to have an Epson CX4600 MFD (printer/copier/scanner), and CUPS and SANE were both convinced that it was a cleverly disguised paperweight. Apparently I offended KDE when I upgraded SANE and CUPS, and suddenly I was receiving an error message saying kdeinit could not be started, and that I should check my [KDE] installation.

Long story short; I put in CD2, cd'd into cdrom/slackware/kde, fired up pkgtool and reinstalled that badboy. Seems to have done the trick, I'll find out when I boot up in the morning (my slackbox is currently located in our bedroom, and the fan keeps my wife up, so the system gets halted every night ).

Hope it works!

Rik
