The specifics of your WM aren't all that crucial at this point. Check if you have CUPS installed (if it was a default/full install from Slack 9.1 then you probably do). Also, go back to the disk and load up the extra Gimp-print and CUPS files since they have the latest (at that time - swaret will download the current versions for you).
Then, open a web browser, type in (no quotes) "localhost:631", click "add printer", login as root and follow the steps. Print the terst page and you should be up and running. It is so straightforward that even I was able to set my Epson USB printer up in no time flat. Come back with any error messages, etc if you do get stuck though because of course ... your mileage may vary!!
Good luck

Grant, Till and Kurt know - Linux Printing

Here's the link directly to your HP Deskjet 712C

We also got a post about it in the LQ Linux HCL right over there on your right ----->

Sorry to have done your homework, for I broke one of the LQ Rules:

You got really blessed this time, instead of flamed, but you should learn to search and read this
about How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

And if you installed lprng along with cups, you'll need to uninstall both, and then reinstall cups.
