Normally, there are three selections, the USB selection is the one I usually choose. But it is not there. Like: usb:/usb/Deskjet_3050A_J611_series?serial=CN14L3C3XB05PJ or similar. I forget the exact 'phrase.'
Today, I try to print. But for some reason it is not in the printer selection menu of libreoffice. So, I go into the cups interface, to delete the printer and restore it, but there is no USB selection. I try the other selection, and it seems to load fine, but I get "rendering complete" and the printer does not react one bit.
I tried hp-setup -i, but I don't see the usb: selection either.
I also try to do lp -P myprinter file.pdf but the same thing happens.
I deleted everything from /var/spool/cups /var/cache/cups /var/run/cups printer.conf. But same thing.
Could there be a problem with the cable? Does the output of dmesg (as root) show any new USB device when you plug the cable in (when the printer is powered on, of course)?

The cable is probably OK then. Did you try a reboot? Maybe some kernel driver crashed or something happened. Also, did you do any software upgrades recently?
Printing the test page fine? That's weird. I'm out of ideas really, but as a general principle, mysterious errors and such inconsistent behaviour indicate a possible hardware problem.
hm.... I had saved it with LibreOffice as a PDF file, so lpr could print it. But it turned out the libreoffice saved it as a blank file, for whatever reason. So, lpr was printing just fine, because it was printing a blank page.
