Possible to send commads to a CUPS server with another computer?

Hi, I need some help/advice, I have an older Epson C44UX printer, if i were to plug it in and set it up on my servers box would my desktop and notebook be able to send commands to it over a network? I am asking this because I have no experience with printers and Linux so I don't know what is or is not possible.

Thanks for your time!
- Rich

CUPS clients can print to any CUPS server on the network. If you start the CUPS server on your PC with the printer attached, and create a print queue for it, all the other PC's in the network that run CUPS will automatically pick up your printer.

Absolutely - the details can be frustrating though. For other *NIX machines, just run CUPS and point them to the server machine (which should be running CUPS server). You can choose to let anyone print or you can spend time setting up authentication, quotas, etc.

For WinDuhs machines, see if you have an option to mimic a network printer port (ipp) or similar. Another option is to set up "lpr" and appropriate filtering. Otherwise samba would be the best tool to share the printer with WinDuhs and there are a few hoops to jump through to get it all set up nicely.

The 'automatic' part of these instruction works when it feels like it in my experience. I had to set up cups on my laptop to be able to use the printer attached to my desktop pc, but some weird things would happen, like the name being changed and other weirdness.

According to this http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...n-Stylus_C44UX the printer works perfectly with CUPS, so your only issues will be with networking and permissions.
