Sorry, but those instructions don't work. When I was using Vector Linux 7.0, the command in question was "xine -f dvd://". So what is the command that works with Slackware 14.1?
Slackware doesn't come with libdvdcss due to patent issues. Have you installed that separately? If not, it won't work.
Based on the output of my system, it seems like your command should work once you have support for dvd decoding. However, I don't know if xine will with it without a recompile.
I would also recommend glorsplitz's recommendation of using VLC. Alien Bob (one of the core Slackware team members) has a VLC package that includes all required dependencies, including dvd decoding (if you get it from his restricted repo).
Sorry, I guess I should have been more specific in my original post. What I meant to ask was: How do I configure Slackware 14.1 to automatically launch xine when I insert a DVD (when I was using Vector Linux 7.0, the command for it was "xine -f dvd://")?
Try starting VLC from the terminal and see if there is any pertinent output.
As for xine, you'll still need libdvdcss before it is able to play DVDs. Pat doesn't include it due to copyright issues. SBo does have a SlackBuild for it, and if you install it, xine might work without any additional requirements. However, it may also require recompiling xine to add support for libdvdcss. I'm honestly not sure.
After doing a bit more "experimenting" with a few files on the DVD in question, I come to find out that it (xine) needs something called a "demuxer plugin". Where do I find one?
