PCI Modem

I just installed a modem, and I am waiting on my isp number to come in. How can I find out if the device is active?

If it is a pci (card) modem the command "lspci" as root will list all pci devices including the modem. That will at least let you know if the card is recognised.

That does not necessarily mean the modem will work. Most pci modem are "winmodems" not hardware modems and as such they will require a winmodem driver which more correctly called module in Linux.`

I used winmodems with lucent chipsets for 4 years with linux but had to compile the modules for my modems for each kernel (or install) against the that kernel source. Ltmodem packages make compiling for lucent modems fairly painless.

I believe there are some other winmodems out there that have precompiled module available but I really can't say much on that and I use adsl now.
