How did you change your password? Does the new one or old password work currently to login?

Which password scheme are you using? One password scheme uses both the /etc/passwd file and /etc/shadow - which actually contains the password. It's not a good idea at all to hack in the password into either of these files by hand. Instead, when you change the password, use the passwd changing tool that's appropriate for the setup you're using. The passwd command prompts you for password changes, and it's the classic, standard utility for managing passwords.. Use the passwd utility to change passwords if you're using a standard password scheme, otherwise use whatever tool matches the style and configuration that you're using.
