password problems

hi.
i am a newbie to networking in general i'm just wondering if it is possible to use one server to do all off the password authentication work?
if it is, then, what to use and a brief outline would be good.
also, some info on setting up login scripts like Win2K would be great...

some extra informaiton:
- the setup is in a school environment. multiple users, not always using the same machine.
- each user has an account, and uses different resources.
- these vary as the user changes years, and so does their password.

if anyone could help that would be great

kevv.

You could also spend some time investigating LDAP or kerberos. NIS is more for large corporate environments. LDAP and kerberos are both lighter weight, and some-what more user-friendly than NIS.
