Question Partial success installing ktown - Plasma 5 not loading (-current)

Hello,

After years of futzing around with Macs and brief, frustrating trials with other distros, I'm happily back on Slackware for the first time since the floppy days. Glad to see not much has changed.

I'm on what is an otherwise good install of the -current branch using AlienBOB's 20190909 install DVD ISO. I opted not to install the kde packages since I read through his instructions regarding the lack of upgrade path.

Upon successful setup and reboot, I did the following:
  1. Updated the few out-of-date packages from a local mirror.
  2. Installed slackpkg+.
  3. Configured slackpkg+.
    • Added the ktown, alienbob, and restricted repositories
      Code:
      MIRRORPLUS['alienbob']=http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/sbrepos/current/x86_64/
      MIRRORPLUS['ktown']=http://slackware.uk/people/alien-kde/current/5/x86_64/
      MIRRORPLUS['restricted']=http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/people/alien/restricted_sbrepos/current/x86_64/
    • Added the repos to the list.
      Code:
      REPOPLUS=( slackpkgplus ktown alienbob restricted )
    • Set the priority to ktown.
      Code:
      PKGS_PRIORITY=( ktown alienbob )
  4. Updated, installed, and upgraded with slackpkg.
    1. update gpg
    2. update
    3. install ktown
    4. install-new
    5. upgrade ktown
    6. upgrade-all

... all at (and explicitly executed) init 3. I rebooted, ran xwmconfig to select Plasma, and logged in with kdm. Plasma being what it is, I expected a longer than usual startup time and waited a while looking at a black screen after the loading splash. Eventually, I got the following dialog error:

Quote:
HPLIP Status Service
No system tray detected on this system.
Unable to start, exiting.
I'm able to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to log out. I'm currently in Xfce, and KDE apps that don't rely on services appear to run fine in it. I've tried all three session options - Plasma, Plasma (Failsafe), and Plasma (Wayland).

Any solutions or direction to logs for additional information is greatly appreciated.

The issue ended up being a duplicate of https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...rk-4175649743/

Plasma was not starting correctly because I had my login shell set to /usr/bin/fish.
