opl3sa2 sound trouble with slackware

I have slackware 8.0, I have an ibm thinkpad with an OPL3-SAx isa sound card. I modprobed isa-pnp and then opl3sa2 and sound works in kde. But it freezes often and after the first running of kde it rarely can start completely again without completely freezing the computer. If I unload the opl3sa2 module, it runs fine. And the start up sound works when kde is starting up, but it often freezes in the middle of it. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hmmm ... try playing with the modules options. One common reason for soundcards
to crash/freeze comps is swapped DMA channels ... on my TP770ED for instance
the box dies when I do "dma=0 dma1=1" instead of "dma=1 dma1=0" :) ... and it does
that in DOS, OS/2, Linux, ... :)

Good luck!
Cheers,
Tink

Read the source Luke!

Install the kernel sources (or extract it in /tmp) and read the documentation. There are detailed instructions there.

Then edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to load your card modules at boot. My card is a OPL3-SAx, but I can't remember the settings now. Sorry...

HTH,

vfs

Hello.
Try to put this on /etc/module.conf.
But you may need to adjust the the port value
(this one is for my Toshiba laptop, I found the value from BIOS setup)

alias sound-slot-0 opl3sa2
post-install sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -L >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
pre-remove sound-slot-0 /bin/aumix-minimal -f /etc/.aumixrc -S >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
options sound dmabuf=1
alias synth0 opl3
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options opl3sa2 mss_io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpu_io=0x330 io=0x538
