nvidia install

I have SLW10.1 with 2.4.29 kernel and an Asus P4S800 mob with Asus GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X card. Following SLW Handbk and threads here, I exited desktop to init3 and ran Nvidia installer. But only got black screen with white, red, and blue small vertical bars. So I rebooted to init3 and edited /etc/x11/xorgconf. back to nv driver. There is no load GLcore line in xorgconf file.
lsmod lists nvidia module as unused and agpgart as unused. Lspci lists VGA Compat. Controller NV28(GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X) at 01:00.0. And xorconfig has nothing about agp mentioned.
I assume the agp module would be used during setup. The Nvidia readme discusses that 'default' is for usage of kernel agp before Nvidia agp. Cant say I'm sure which agpgart is in lsmod.
Some help in getting Nvidia driver working would be appreciated. Should /sbin/modprobe agpgart be run before adding nvidia driver line to xorgconf? Thanx.

-I ran the Nvidia installer right from the get go before configuring anything.

sh NVIDIA......pkg1.run

Then I ran xorgconfig.

Emaced /etc/X11/xorg.conf and changed nv to nvidia -then typed "startx"

That's all I had to do.

Hope that kinda helps but you probably know all that allready.I can pretty much do whatever I need to with linux but I'm not very technical.

My money is on the pony that said in a thread, that 2.4.xx kernel may not support agp-8x.
slow it down in the bios to 4x.
or...
sh NVIDIA...pkg1.run --help
sh NVIDIA...pkg1.run --uninstall (0ption)
xorgconfig run through the options and use #18 with "nv" kernel.
save xconfig file.
DO THE PREVIOUS IF YOU DID ANYTHING ELSE TO YOUR CONFIG FILE MORE SO THAN WHAT
< mortal > SAID!!!
Dont mess up the xconfig file more than it has been, or more than it needs to ;^>.
Re-read the Readme file beggining to end unpack the NVIDIA....pkg1.run file.
In .../nvida...pkg1/...doc/README look for stuff relitive to agp 8x, and your card. (and FAQ)
I don't recomend using the bata testing of 'hyper' agp or whatever the option is to increase the speed of the card (found near the bottom of the text).
1st check to see if the nvidia kernel and or kernel.org 2.4.3x supports your AGP chipset or, a generic (less liked idea) agp-8x of your chip.
if the chipset for agp can be placed into the kernel DO IT.>>> www.kernel.org
. re-modulate the kernel if you need to.
there are two problems here, 1 support for the AGP-chipset and 2 for the NVIDIA card!
if they conflict with eachother, something like the card using 4x and the chipset using 8x, you may/will see problems.
if the video card module is not able to support agp-8x swich the bios setting to use agp-4x.

nvidia f/up

thanx for last response. I tried agp8 to 4x in bios to no avail. I've narrowed the problem to the kernel not seeing Sis agp properly. 2.6 kernel trial likewise nidia driver no go. Debian Sarge similar problem. So not sweating it now. Will wait for next SLW version.
