now before you reply with, theres already heaps of threads to do with nvidia drivers hear me out. i have a mx440 64 and downloaded the drivers from nvidia the .run files then i run them using sh [nvidia driver] the result is that i dont have the kernal source and the headers apparently if you download the iso images you dont get the kernal source. so i found out what kernal i have using uname -r i get 2.4.20
so i go to the slackware ftp site and find kernal source for 2.4.21 or 2.4.22 i suppose these are not the kernal source i use. this is my situation do i have to update my kernal to get the kernal source that is avaliable from the site to install the nvidia drivers. ive read that alot of people use the older way using the nvidia-kernal.tar.gz and glx .tar.gz but i wanted to try the .run files first. thanks
First of all, your text is a bit difficult to understand since you don't use dots or commas =)
1. The kernel sources are included in the ISO. Mount the CD in your CD-ROM and mount it
$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
In the directory /slackware/k/ pass the command 'pkgtool'.
From the menu choose 'install packages from current directory' and PRESTO! kernel sources are now installed in /usr/src/linux.
2. The headers problem came up for me aswell, but that was just because I forgot to reboot my computer after compiling a new kernel.
Yes, for some reason (space reasons it seems) the sources weren't included in the 9.0 ISO. They should still be available at (at least some of) the ftp sites, though. I use the Swedish one:
ok i have downloaded the source and the .run file ran perfectly. so i went into the /etc/X11/XF86config file and changed the driver "vesa" to "nvidia". i rebooted the system then tried the xserver and it chrashed with an error
data incomplete in file /etc/X11/XF86config
undefined Device "vesa FrameBuffer" referrenced by screen "Screen 1".
so i know that i have changed the driver from "vesa" to nvidia so i change this to nvidia and get this error message
data incomplete in file /etc/X11/XF86config
undefined Device "nvidia FrameBuffer" referrenced by screen "Screen 1".
so then i try to coment out the whole line and get
undefined device "(null)" referrenced by screen "Screen 1".
ive noticed that i have 3 XF86 file in my /etc/X11/ directory
XF86config, XF86config-fbdev and XF86config-vesa
its working i get a nvidia picture before the xserver starts up!!!!!!
i think i was using a different driver so i rerun the xfree86config script and setup the graphics card as the defalut nv then just followed the links in LQ and now im stoked
