NVIDIA Driver, chmod, and make gconfig (all related)

I migrated to 2.6.10, and use NVIDIA's proprietary module. Unless I run

chmod 0666 /dev/nvidia/*, a lot of the GL capabilities are reduced. One of the side effects is that I am unable to run make gconfig in my kernel source directory as root. I know that this has something to do with the syntax in the chmod 0666. I got that instruction from the NVIDIA docs; how can I fix this?

what error on gconfig? if it's bailing on you it's probably either your code or your libs ( it always seg faults on me and I have never used chmod on the nvidia device files). can you use the qt or ncurses ui?

Does this help?

looks like a code problem, it's failing alot of assertions before it bails on the seg fault ( run "strace make gconfig" to see what I mean). I'd use make xconfig or make menuconfig.
