Well, from the title you can tell my problem. The window comes up, but no tool bar,
no buttons, just an empty window.

The cause? The only think I can think of is that I recently installed firefox about 2
days ago, but if I recall, mozilla has worked since then. Not sure if that was it
though - but I havn't done anything else (updateing or installing).

Other info:
1- netscape works and has my mozilla bookmarks
2- firefox works (minus a few plugins I havn't installed yet)
3- tried starting mozilla from the command line - NO output at all
4- searched LQ - common solution was a bad java plugin link. Mine
is linked to /usr/lib/java/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so
which is what it is suppose to be (I'm about 97% sure on that).
5- mozilla won't start for users or root
6- uninstalled mozilla via pkgtool, and reinstalled with " installpkg mozilla* " using
my archived swaret update files. Exact same problem.
7- Using mozilla 1.7.3 (correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I think slack 10 originally
came with 1.7.2 and updated to 1.7.3 for security reasons so I don't want to go back -
going off memory on that one.)
8- One thing that kinda pis$es me off is that I used the firefox installer - So I can't
uninstall it via pkgtool. I installed it in /opt/firefox/ - can I just delete that directory?
or does it drop files somewhere in /usr/ ? If it did, I can't find'em. Any help on the
uninstallation would be great too !

I can muddle along with netscape for a while, but a good suggestion or direction
would be appreciated before I end up doing something drastic .

Well the first thing is to try a clean profile. Obviously deleting your old one is a bit drastic as then you'd loose your bookmarks (and mail if you use the mozilla mail client) so why not just rename the .mozilla folder in your home folder to move it out of the way and then relaunch mozilla? Your new Firefox profile will probably be inside that folder too so you'll be starting afresh with that too. But if you get them working you can copy your bookmarks.html into your new profile.

I've never used the Firefox installer so I don't know what it installs where but I don't see why you can't just delete it. I allways liked the firefox.tar.gz 'cos it was all in the one folder. Makes it easy to delete to try a new build. Plus if you untar yourself you can stick it where you want.

I renamed my .mozilla to oldmozilla and not only did it not start, its now worse.
The window doesn't even come up. (have not, nor will not start firefox until this is resolved
and the solution is known).

So I tried going back to netscape, and it asked me to select a profile that wasn't in use.
Turns out I had to start top (to find out the PID's) and kill about 4-5 mozilla things that
were running. Now netscape is OK. So mozilla is now hagging in memory when I try to
start it. Great.

I also created a user (test) and it did the same thing, so since it happens to me (my account),
a new account and root, I can guess it is not a permission issue.

you might run updatedb and then try locate to find any other references of firefox. There would likely be a link in /usr/bin also.

Well, as far as uninstalling firefox, that shouldn't be too much of a problem. No files
were installed in /usr/ , just /opt/firefox/ , a few icons in /opt/kde/-> , and then of
course the ~/.mozilla/firefox/ for the user settings. Apparently a link was not copied to
/usr/bin/ as when I type ' firefox ' in the console, command not found (and I manually
checked in addition to using 'locate' as suggested by ringwraith ).

However I'm still hoping someone has a grand solution to get my mozilla back.

EDIT:
Well, I got the original mozilla installs off the FTP - and I'm back with mozilla 1.7.

Progress has been made.

Before I did that, I did try to just install the 1.7.3 with the same results - nothing.
On to try to upgrade again.

I remember I once got into similar trouble after using Mozilla as root. I had to delete file /usr/lib/mozilla-1.7/components/compreg.dat (I renamed it actually) to solve that problem.
