no sound in some steam games after installing gstreamer ugly

Hi,

Slack64-14.0 with multilib, skype (slackbuilds), steam (alienBOB) and all its dependencies works fine.

In order to play mp3 on my system, I installed gst-plugin-ugly from slackbuilds and now I can play all sound files. But, when I run skype + steam I have a problem in that some steam games (rochard and trine2) has no sound. TF2 is the only one that has sound.

Also I noticed that if in KDE the problem is much worse, in that KDE will instantly notify me that there is no sound card available. This is not happening in other DE like XFCE or fluxbox.

If I uninstall gstream ugly then the sound is up again (in steam games) but I can't play mp3's anymore.

So,
1. how can I debug this?
2. what mp3 plugins do you guys use?

you might need to rebuilt your steam package

I used to have a similiar problem, and rebuilding the program that had the issue solved it.

Thanks for the tip bartgymnast. Unfortunately, that didn't solved the problem.

Still, I think, I have the root cause: is because I trust too much alsactl store/restore. I found it very odd that when installing a codec my alsamixer configuration to get random values even if they were saved previously with the desired level.

I have not noticed but flash clips were silent too because PCM volume was set to zero. Setting it higher solved the problem.
